"Wave Energy in the Mediterranean"

Wave energy is a relatively new RES (Renewable Energy Source), which is gaining momentum around the globe . It has not reached a commercial stage, yet, but many projects are looking optimistic to launch wave energy as a viable RES complement to wind energy and solar power within a few years. Malta is surrounded by sea and it seems like a great opportunity to use wave energy since there is plenty of space to set up wave farms. We have lined up several prominent speakers to discuss this possibility from different perspectives. Professor George Kallos is an authority on atmospheric and wave modeling and will talk about how oceanographic research can map the wave climate in the Mediterranean. Mr Foerd Ames is the inventor of the OWEC® Ocean Wave Energy Converter and has over 20 years of experience in wave energy extraction. He will discuss how it will be possible to deploy his latest incarnation of the OWEC® in Maltese waters. Dr Cedric Caruana and Professor Cyril Spiteri will talk about how we can utilize wave energy and different ways to transport it to the point of use. We will also listen to presentations by Mr Björn Welander about the environmental impacts and minister of Resources and Rural Affairs Mr George Pullicino about Malta’s renewable energy future. The seminar will be chaired and moderated by Professor Luciano Mule-Stagno.
