WAVE ENERGY – AN UNTAPPED RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE
The oceans cover 75% of the world’s surface and, therefore, are one of the largest renewable energy sources available to contribute to the security of energy supply and reduce greenhouse gases emissions. Furthermore, a whole new industry with jobs and manufacturing is around the corner when ocean energy conversion technology reaches commercial stage.
The global potential wave energy resource, exploitable with today’s technology, is estimated to be in the order of 45.000 TWh/year (as a reference, the world’s electricity consumption is around 16.000 TWh/year). Conversion of the wave energy resource alone could supply a substantial part of electricity demand of several countries in Europe. We will discuss if the electricity demands in Malta and other islands in the Mediterranean could partly be met by converting a small fraction of the available ocean energy resource.
